ABSTRACT:

The reduction of level of joint pain has an important role in enabling effectiveness of Cryotherapy as an independent intervention. The objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Cryotherapy on reduce level of Joint pain among working women. The research design adopted was Pre-experimental. The conceptual framework applied for this study was Wiendenbach theory. The study was conducted in Orthoplus hospital, Rajkot. The sample size was 40 as an intervention the Cryotherapy was administered for 7 days to each sample. The collected data were analyzed by using inferential statistical method. ANOVAs was used to evaluate the effectiveness of Cryotherapy on reduce level of Joint pain among patients admitted in orthopedic ward. The obtained ANOVAs value was 42.11. This showed significant at 0.001 level. Hence their findings of the study revealed that the Cryotherapy helps in reducing the levels of Joint pain among patients admitted in orthopedic ward with selected demographic variables.

INTRODUCTION:

Temperature in a particular region of it is also known as thermo therapy by subtraction, due to the use of a thermal stimulus at a temperature below the one of the body so that the heat withdrawn from the body can occur1. Heat is always transfer’s unidirectionally from the warmer body to the less heated one cryotherapy is indicated for the treatment of pain generated by traumatic and/or inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases, especially acute ones, to reduce swelling and to induce muscle relaxation. pain is one of the most common complains made by patients during their time in hospital, and one of the important cause of fear in patients who are to undergo a procedure during hospitalization. Pain is a complex, multidimensional experience. For many people, it is a major problem that causes suffering and reduces quality of life. Pain is one of the major reasons that people seek health care2

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

A physically active individual lives much healthier and active life than people who are physically inactive”. This is true for every one but especially for people with osteoarthritis. In America 32.9 million Americans (about 23 % of adult populations) had some type of arthritis. In this 15% of the population experience long term complications due to osteoarthritis related conditions. Pain and stiffness are the main features of osteoarthritis and it may result in deformity and disability.3

The Health statistics report stated that, osteoarthritis of knee based on racial categories – 27 % of Caucasian population, 2.1% of American population and 1% of people classified in ‘other’ racial categories. It was reported that more than 20 million Americans have symptomatic osteoarthritis. Women had higher rates of incidence than men especially after age of 40 years4. In the US, osteo arthritis numbers second to Ischemic heart   disease as a cause of work disability in men over the age of 50 years. In UK it affects approximately 2.5% of the populations. In India primary osteoarthritis was more common than secondary osteoarthritis.Pain particularly experienced by orthopaedic patient is one of the most common clinical stimulation encountered by health professionals especially by nurses. The nurse is most effective in providing comfort by understanding the nature of pain and client’s perception and working closely with the clients to find out the best relief measures5.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

1.      To assess level of pain among patients with arthralgia in selected orthopedic hospital.

2.     To assess the effectiveness of Cryotherapy on level of pain among patient admitted in selected orthopedic hospital at Rajkot.

3.     To find out the association between the levels of Arthralgic pain after Cryotherapy and their selected demographic variable.

HYPOTHESES:

H1:    There will be a significant reduction in the level of Arthralgic pain after Cryotherapy.

H2:   There will be a significant association between the levels of Arthralgic pain after Cryotherapy and their selected demographic variable.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

RESEARCH APPROACH:

Quantitative research approach.

RESEARCH DESIGN:

A quasi experimental study, time series research design.

VARIABLES:

Independent variable:

Cryotherapy. Demographic variables will be selected such as age, sex, weight, education, work status, family income, and dietary pattern, duration of illness and previous mode of therapy.

Dependent variable:

level of pain (Arthralgia).

SETTING:

The study will be conducted in selected Hospitals at Rajkot.

POPULATION:

Accessible Population:

Patients admitted in orthopedic hospital.

Target Population:

Patients admitted with Arthralgia in orthopedic hospital at Rajkot.

Sampling Size:

The sample size of the study was 40 Patients with Arthralgia.

Sampling Technique:

Non probability purposive sampling technique: Samples were based on inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Data analysis:

The responses were analyzed through descriptive statistics (Frequency, percentage) and inferential statistics (ANOVAs and Chi-Square).

Demographic Findings:

1    The majority of 13(32.5%) the sample’s age is between 60-70years.

2    The majority of 21(52.5%) the sample’s are males.

3    The majority of 35(87.5%) the sample’s had 0-1 weeks of hospital stay.

4    The majority of 28(70%) the sample’s are on associated disease condition.

5    The majority of 40(100%) the sample’s are on cold application.

6    The majority of 18(45%) the sample’s are 3-4 joint involvement.

The study shows that the calculated chi square value is greater than tabulated value at the level of 0.05 for selected demographic variables job duration, rest all the calculated chi square value is less than tabulated value at the level of 0.05 for selected demographic variables, which shows there is no significant association between effectiveness of meditation and selected demographic variables.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

The basic aim of the current study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Cryotherapy on Arthralgia among orthopaedic patients Admitted in orthopaedic ward. The study has been conducted by using pre-experimental design. Orthoplus hospital has been selected for conducting the study. The sample size was 40; patients having Arthralgia among orthopaedic patients Admitted in orthopaedic ward were selected. The result value was 42.11 That was significant at p<0.05 level.

CONCLUSION:

The main conclusion from this present study is that most of the Arthralgia patients Admitted in orthopaedic ward had moderate to severe level of joint pain in pre test and mild, moderate grades of level of joint pain in post test. This shows the imperative need to understand the purpose of Cryotherapy regarding reduction of level of joint pain among patients Admitted in orthopaedic ward and it will improve the quality of life which includes the stability in nutritional physiological, psychological, vocational and lifestyles aspects.
